Need a copy of System 6.0.8, 7.0.1, or a newer version of the Classic Mac OS for your vintage Mac? You can dig through apple.com and try to find them – or you can download them using the updated links on this page. (Apple does rearrange things, making it more difficult to find things.) All versions of the Mac OS linked here are copyrighted by Apple Computer and free to Macintosh owners. System 7.1.x as well as 7.6.x and later are not free products and must be purchased.
This is a Bootable, Universal Install CD-ROM of Mac OS 9.2.2, US English. Suitable for G3 & G4 Macintosh models capable of booting from a Classic Mac OS via CD-ROM. Mac OS CPU Software 4.9, includes the Mac OS ROM file v9.2.1 Top DL: The 9.2.2 universal OS installer CD's archive is a.zip compressed.iso image. It is OK to burn this back to CD using ImgBurn on Windows or Disk Utility on Mac.
Making Floppies
Software is stuffed and requires an expander, such as StuffIt Expander (which was traditionally bundled with early Mac web browsers). Mounting disk images or making floppies from them requires Disk Copy (download Disk Copy) or MountImage.
You will need a 400K or 800K floppy drive to produce single-sided disks for use with the Mac 128K and 512K Fat Mac. Apple’s high density floppy drives cannot format single-sided floppies.
You cannot use a USB floppy drive to create 800K floppy disks; they can only be formatted and written to using an Apple 800K or 1.4M HD floppy drive.
You should have no trouble formatting and writing to high density floppies using a USB floppy drive.
Drive Prep
Whenever possible, Apple branded hard drives should be formatted or updated with HD SC Setup 7.3.5 or later before installing a new version of the OS. (Exception: If the hard drive of a Mac Portable is formatted with any version newer than 7.3.1, it will crash instead of waking from sleep mode.)

Classic Mac OS Updates
Mac OS X updates are readily handled through Software Update, but pre-X updates can be difficult to locate. Links are to English language version of the Mac OS.
Where to Buy the Classic Mac OS
You may be able to purchase system software from Apple or dealers with old stock.
Mac OS 7.6 and later are usually available through dealers, eBay, and LEM Swap. Mac OS 7.6 requires a 32-bit clean Mac, a 68030 or later CPU, 8 MB of RAM (16 MB recommended), and at least 70 MB of available drive space (120 MB if you wish to install all the options). https://portalever904.weebly.com/blog/can-you-download-spore-on-a-mac.

As of the posting of this tip, the Mac OS 9 downloads on Apple's support site are not fully available.
This tip of a method of obtaining the downloads was suggested by sdfox7. Special thanks to them for decoding
how to discover old downloads.
Locate the support.apple.com website for the download. In the case of most of the system downloads for Mac OS 9, there is this link:
and
In event the link doesn't work, go to http://web.archive.org/ to find it. For this link, the example site is:
Mac Os 9.0 Download
If you are looking for the 9.2.2 download, the direct link from that page is
Clicking through
Niconico download.
First on the page you will find North American English, 9.2.2, 21.3MB.
When you right click, or control-mouse button the download link and select copy link, you obtain:
Edit this link to reveal just the file name and not the path going to it and paste it in your favorite search engine. In this case, the file name is:
Mac_OS_9.2.2_Update.smi.bin
Searching you'll find that this link has that download.
As it happens, the website:
has the download links for all the Mac OS 9 updates and others.
You can use a similar method for many other downloads of older software.
As I also found out, .bin files even Mac OS X 10.9 understands. .smi files Disk utility won't open in Mac OS X 10.9, but it will convert to .dmg files.
Mac Os 9.2.2 Download
If you copy the contents to a USB Flash drive of the same name as the dmg file (without the suffix), it can hold the installer in question and connect older Mac OS 9 machines to run the installer from. Just make sure the USB drive is formatted HFS+ no journaling, or FAT16 and under 4GB in size.
The other thing to note, is that no Mac running Mac OS X 10.3 or higher supports the old style floppy disks of under 1.4 MB. The beige PowerMacs were the last that supported the 800k floppies with the single notch on the the corner. If you have floppies with two notches on either corner of the label, then they are 1.4 MB.
1.4 MB floppy looks like:
400k and 800k floppy look like:
Mac Os 9.2.2 Universal
Note how the 800k only has one notch for the write protect tab, and no other opening on the other corner.
